Wow, just wow. Libra “gets girls”. So long as said “girls” have a vagina and menstruate. So, you know, not those ridiculous trans women who think they are real women when we all know they’re not. What a load of mean-spirited, offensive, transphobic crap. Might be a good time for me to buy that Mooncup. Fuck you, Libra.

I’m so glad I have a mooncup so asshole companies like these don’t get my money.

I can’t get over that this isn’t ‘woman = period’ ignorance like I thought it might be when I saw that Libra had posted something offensive (I half expected some “Your PERIOD is your MARK OF WOMENHOOD” cissentric/trans erasure crap that I’ve seen before), this is actively pitting cis women against trans women for cheap laughs.

I’m on the jab at the mo, so these wankers aren’t getting my money either thank Gods, but … HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

"If white American feminist theory need not deal with the differences between us, and the resulting..."

“If white American feminist theory need not deal with the differences between us, and the resulting difference in our oppressions, then how do you deal with the fact that the women who clean your houses and tend your children while you attend conferences on feminist theory are, for the most part, poor women and women of Color? What is the theory behind racist feminism?”

-
-Audre Lorde (via soydulcedeleche)

I don’t understand these attacks on feminist theory. There’s tons of women of color fighting for women’s rights. And it’s a little bigoted to think that all white feminists are rich hire help and have time off work to attend conventions.

Some of us ARE just like you in more ways than some want to admit. And we do want your voice heard and we want to stop pointing fingers at eachother and start dismantling and ignoring the patriarchy. We can change the world but only together.

(via dianamcqueen)

the poster above is why i hate white feminists. privilege-denying fucks.

(via soydulcedeleche)

Hey, bitch. I’m not denying prividle, If you actually talked to me or read my blog you’re know that. But instead of assuming everything about me, maybe you should I don’t know, ask me more? I KNOW all our experience is DIFFERENT, but the ultimate goal is the same. and frankly, HATING WHITE FEMINISTS is part of the fucking problem. Hating a whole group of people and not wanting to engage with them because of all the things you assume about them? Gee, that sounds like what feminism is trying to stop. I never said I don’t deal with the difference between us, We are ALL different. lumping us into GROUPS only severs to seperate us more at the end of the day. I want to learn about everyone’s culture, and expand my thoughts and experience. But you don’t fucking know me or what I’ve been through. YOu don’t know how I’ve been oppressed. You just think I haven’t at all, and I assume that because I have white priveldge all my other education or experience is negated by my skin color THAT YOU ASSUME indicated my background. That’s really disgusting. I don’t fucking have people WORKING For me, so this quote is not directed at me specifically, THAT is what I was talking as. THE LUMPING of all WHITE FEMINISTS TOGETHER. Like you just did. So yeah. I have a problem with that. NOT WITH YOU, or our differences or our lives or our experiences. I want us all to be free. I want to strive for that and reach out to people. It’s just really hard when there’s a bunch of people who just assume things about you and then shut down. That’s really how to keep the system going. At least I’m talking back and asking questions. You just shot me down because you assumed I was one of those people you don’t like. I wish you would take another look, instead of labeling and dismissing. Yes, lighter skinned people get privledges, that’s a given, but it’s sure not as hell a universal thing that grants us all magic powers. And if you’re a woman, that privledge isn’t as great as you think, unless you fit a mold. So, I’m not denying anything. I’m just saying, I may be white, but I fucking don’t have a job and am living in a shitty place, and thanks god I have family, cause I might be on the street if I didn’t. So historically, sure, but right now? You wanna split hairs? When we could all be helping eachother? There’s a few million other people fighting everyday. I don’t see my whiteness getting me a job. I see my old job being given to a white MAN because the men I worked with were uncomfortable with working with a woman. There are differences, and I acknowledge the hardships, btu seriously. Just because I might’ve had a better start than most, doesn’t mean when I hit hard times, I’m not like other people on welfare trying to get by. (via dianamcqueen)

I like how the first thing this white feminist, dianamcqueen, does is call a woman of color, soydulcedeleche, a bitch just because soydulcedeleche disagreed with her. Great job proving Audre Lorde’s point.

(via angrybrownbaby)

Hey look at me I’m such a good non-racist feminist that I called a black woman a bitch when she had the audacity to suggest that I don’t understand racism as well as she does.

(via ethiopienne)

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! Yo, dianamcqueen, stay pressed you a racist sack of shit.

(via liquornspice)

OMG but it’s so MEAN of WOC to not realise, psychically, that dianamcqueen is AN ALLY who they need to TRUST and LOVE and FEED COOKIES!!! Her actual displayed behaviour notwithstanding …

attentioninconsistency:

But isn’t punishment and discipline a good way to teach kids a lesson? Not so, according to Alfie Kohn, author of Unconditional Parenting and a host of other books on discipline and education. “To punish or discipline a child is to deliberately make a child feel bad in the hopes that this will have a positive result,” says Kohn. “But all that punishment can ever buy you is temporary compliance, and at a very high cost. The real lesson it teaches is about power: Those with more of it can coerce those with less of it to do whatever they demand. It makes kids more self-centered, less concerned about the impact of their actions on others… . No wonder we have to discipline a child over and over: The problem isn’t with the child; it’s with the whole idea of punishment.”

via (Parent Map)

This paragraph is so amazing I could cry. It perfectly sums up my thoughts, feelings and opinions toward discipline. I also feel that is another reason the justice system in this country NEEDS a major makeover. Prison is temporary compliance at a very high cost.

notyourkinddear:

fresafresca:

I read this defense of Hugo Schwyzer by Clarisse Thorne over at Role/Reboot, and what strikes me most, is her general indignation that people don’t trust him. The post struck me as scoldy and high-handed and it’s unfortunate because I don’t think she is making a distinction between people that may have threatened violence towards her or Feministe (don’t know if that happened, but that would be awful if something that extreme happened) and between the people that had valid reasons for distrusting Hugo. Not everyone who disagreed with Hugo and Clarisse’s decision to interview him were being abusive. In fact in the comments for that original post, I don’t think anyone was being abusive. I’m not privy to the Feministe inbox, I don’t know the e-mails they decided not to publish, I don’t know if communication “behind the scenes” was threatening. But I do know that people in the comments had valid counterarguments for what was presented, and I think these people were treated dismissively by Clarisse in general.

Something else stood out to me, cause it felt a little off. She mentioned in her Hugo defense on how she “rarely” has found feminists writing about the prison industrial complex, and I just thought this didn’t seem right to me. I haven’t spent much time reading feminist/womanist works but I know that here on tumblr, I see occasional posts on my dash by both WOC feminists and WOC womanists about the prison industrial complex. I did a five minute Google search and found out that Angela Davis has written about prison from a feminist perspective and I found this post about prison over at Crunk Feminist Collective which contained the following paragraph:

“We … want our readers to know that we understand the prison industrial complex as a social problem that occurs at the intersections of race, gender, and class, sexuality and ability. It is therefore a feminist issue.”

Clarisse didn’t mention any of the above when she talked about the “rare” feminist prison industrial complex writer. And ya know, what I found in five minutes of Google searching is not exhaustive or in-depth at all! It just didn’t sit right with me.

(edit: I just noticed that Clarisse reposted her Role/Reboot defense at Feministe and the comments are preemptively entirely closed for that post. It’s amazing to me that her need to defend Hugo is so strong, she is not willing to hear dissent AT ALL now. Wow.)

Fuck Feministe. For real, this whole “no one else is talking about…!” shit that white *Feminists do is so much bullshit. Angela Davis has a LONG history of talking about the prison industrial complex. As does Andrea Smith. And Victoria Law. And you know, “just bloggers” like BFP and so many others. But you know what these people all have in common? THEY ARE WOC. And Clarisse sure as hell can’t acknowledge that WOC got a jump on her, right? WOC, or even MOC, can’t possibly be the experts on this matter. But damn, it’s Feministe. They KNOW they are completely full of shit, but folks keep reading them and supporting them so they can say whatever they want and never have to take responsibility.

ETA: Also, this? “Because of Hugo’s history, a lot of people really don’t like him.”

Fuck no. A lot of people don’t like Hugo because he is presently a self-righteous racist prick from hell who continues to be a sexist pig while making his living/name off of talking about gender. Has nothing to do with the power of redemption and change and a sordid far-gone-past.

i just read the post from clarisse, and found it so offensive i could hardly speak. first of all, as notyourkinddear notes, feminists of color have been at the fucking forefront of naming prison industrial complex as being inherently problematic. they’ve *also* been at the forefront of finding *solutions* to the problem of depending on the the prison industrial complex to solve domestic violence or rape. incite! women of color against violence and critical resistance specifically have done amazing work—and incite! has published or been intimately connected to the publication of various work questioning and building on restorative/transformative justice in context of intimate partner abuse. namely: the revolution starts at home. which oh, wasn’t promoted on any of the big feminist blogs—but hugo’s work was.

and none of this gets into the work that indigenous feminists have done, chicana feminists, latina feminists, black feminists, immigrant feminists, sex worker feminists, disabled feminists, etc etc etc have done around the prison industrial complex—which we’ve *had* to because so much of our lives intersect on a *daily* bases with prison pipelines and paramilitary type presence of police in our barrios and hoods.

but *F*eminism builds relationships with people who can *promote* them—who can *mentor* them into positions where they utilize promotion. this man, who has had a fucked up history with several women of color online, who has a fucked up history towards women including attempted murder and abuse, *has power* to promote—and we don’t.

I just….i believe in redemption. I believe people can change. I believe that with all my heart as a person who has fucked things up and changed and as a person who has been wronged. I promote the idea of transformation in my blogging constantly.

BUT. you don’t get to *erase* the work that women of color done to build a way to make a relationship with a white man *make sense*. if you want him to promote your work. fine. says so. if you genuinelly like him and think he’s changed—fine. don’t expect others to trust him because you do. but just fucking say it, either way. do NOT sit there and go Oh, there is no feminist discussion on transformation and prison industrial complex and abuse and violence and so I *need to build a relationship with this man* —it’s me continuing to do good feminist work!

No. you don’t get to erase us so that you can make sense of this relationship. you just don’t. not after everything he did to women of color bloggers who tried to make our work visible. you just don’t.

remember that time when jessica yee’s book just came out and somebody (i don’t remember if it was yee or latoya or some unrelated blogger—i think it might’ve actually been a white woman, just not sure) asked why no big feminist blog had done a write up or otherwise even mentioned her book. and the wrath of feminist jesus came down—“fill the space” and “she should’ve picked a better publisher” and “why isn’t this listed on amazon?’ etc etc etc. the steely gaze turned so hard on yee, i’m surprised she didn’t burst into flames.

but HUGO—on the other hand—gets links without asking for them, promotion, interviews, and *protection*. comments shut down. reprimands. he’s *changed*. assurances. protection. feminist based protection.

the rest of us see all this. we see the choice being made.

we see.

So for a 2011 recap I have to recap 2008?!?- Past(1/3)

blackamazon:

I usually do year end recaps and well this past week has been a doozy so lets go. I ask if you reblogged anything I said about Hugo Schwyzer/Seal Press/Feministe/Feministing/or the current paper thing you reblog this to honor my desire to at least be equally distributed as a writer as I am as an object of study

I have to let you in loved ones on a secret.

I do a lot of this ” Blackamazon” shit, as a deliberate “put off”. I am for the most part and my decent GPA at an Ivy League school proves it.

Reasonably well versed in academic jargon, the veener of class niceties and complex critical and analytical thinking.

In fact when I started this blog I was shoulder deep in that kind of self editing, continual filtering process that comes with being at the kind of intersection that being so insituated , while being BELOW poverty line poor, of color and neuro-atypical can produce.

The point of ” Having Read The Fine Print” was not further my academic, journalistic, or artistic careers one ( I have decent personal histories all) but to use the skills I acquired in what was both an academic heaven and often a person hell , in ways that applied to MY life, neuro-processes and personal history .

AFTER A SIGNIFICANT PERSONAL TRAUMA.

after a life of the more regular traumas inflicted on a perosn with multiple marginal identities.

And , silly me, after hearing that this new fangled blogosphere was producing work specifically around young women and political action with “new” ideas getting into the WORK of that.

That was pretty much exactly 5 years ago.

And let me tell you what I resent more THAN ANYTHING else about this Paper/Schwyzer/Slutwalk/International Women’s Day / OWS clusterbomb of a year in blogging online.

The fact that for almost ALL of it , the engaging parties are reaching back anywhere from two to three years into my personal life , while saying with completely straight faces , they are the agents of ” progress/learning/or uplift”

I personally have only marginally believed that blogging/social media would ” change the world” . I have believed that teh ability for marginalized and scattered peoples to be able to perform the rituals and actions of self care, community building, humor, information sharing , at close to real time over extended boundaries would

ENABLE feelings of strength, camraderie, and self determination AS well as speed organizing, response and support in ways that COULD LEAD to changes as well as being

PERFECTLY SUFFICIENT ON THEIR OWN due to the revolutionary nature ( as a CONTINUAL process of reimagining the self and the constructs of politics ,government, and other paradigms)

of these populations having new ( mostly) unhindered and regulated access to each other.

Of which I AM A MEMBER and I wanted to participate as such and not as a high faluting “academic/talking head”

Which leads to me eschewing things like editing, eliminating corrections of my AAVE and Guyanese Creolese, swearing, and indulging in contra-indicative demands for transparency during key community buildings .

That was an interesting decision , even more so five years later

Next UP- Why this decision has cost/gained/allowed me to observer

Feministe hosted an interview with a male “feminist” and former sexual predator who’s publicly admitted to making an attempt on his ex-lover’s life (for her own good, apparently). When multiple people point out that he’s not a good dude, Clarisse Thorn decides to close the comments. And instead of apologizing, she chides Feministe’s readership for calling him a narcissistic sociopath… because that’s irresponsible.

I know Feministe is awful, especially lately, but I found this particularly disturbing.

Thank god someone else is pissed off about this. The “ugliness of the tone” for the love of god, the “ugliness of the tone” of the responses to a man who posits himself as a feminist authority while also admitting he tried to murder his girlfriend.

I remember reading something by hugo schwyzer once in passing and thinking it was pretty basic but he was probably going to get huge accolades for saying it while white and male, since the gist of it was “look at me saying this while being a dude!”

Now I have read this and I have a headache. (Heavy trigger warning on that link for abuse, implied sexual assault, and a self-proclaimed feminist man trying to murder his unconscious girlfriend and make it look like a suicide pact.)

How Not To Be A Feminist Man: try to murder your unconscious ex-girlfriend, then write an article years later about how it’s all water under the bridge now in order to boost your credibility as a “self-made feminist man” who pulled himself out of drug addiction and murderousness by his bootstraps so why can’t we all just move on now.

WHAT THE FUCK I have never liked Hugo but I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS, I NEED ALL THE SHOWERS.

He really did, he really did try to murder his girlfriend, and then he made this post about it. He really did! He really did.

Just posting this for the next jackwad that gets all upset when I say Schwyzer is a big douchefuck and don’t fucking quote him and then be surprised when I unfollow you. And you know what? I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIM TRYING TO KILL HIS GIRLFRIEND. He’s a such a MASSIVE fail of humanness that I didn’t even need to know that fact to find him 110% repulsive. But you know, sure, since everyone else has to see something THIS BLATANT, now ya’ll know…

ETA: I also do not take you serious at all if you are in any way surprised that Feministe handled things that way. I really don’t take you serious if you read Feministe at all unless it’s to mock them for their also 110% repulsiveness.

what. in. the. fuck.

i had no idea about the trying to kill the girl friend. i have *never* understood why so many particularly white women are so supportive of him—the things he’s admitted to make me sick. but things that *i* knew he admitted to were the sex with students and the abuse towards his wife. which are bad enough.now this?

smh. they are so fucking *supportive* of him. they have no problem at all with him calling himself a feminist. he organized with women of color on the slut march. an abuser spoke from a position of authority about women’s sexual safety and integrity. they support him SO much. they *fight* for him.

"Because that’s the thing about Scooby-Doo: The bad guys in every episode aren’t monsters, they’re..."

“
Because that’s the thing about Scooby-Doo: The bad guys in every episode aren’t monsters, they’re liars.

I can’t imagine how scandalized those critics who were relieved to have something that was mild enough to not excite their kids would’ve been if they’d stopped for a second and realized what was actually going on. The very first rule of Scooby-Doo, the single premise that sits at the heart of their adventures, is that the world is full of grown-ups who lie to kids, and that it’s up to those kids to figure out what those lies are and call them on it, even if there are other adults who believe those lies with every fiber of their being. And the way that you win isn’t through supernatural powers, or even through fighting. The way that you win is by doing the most dangerous thing that any person being lied to by someone in power can do: You think.
”

-
Ask Chris #81: Scooby-Doo and Secular Humanism (via love-and-radiation)

caffeinatedfeminist:

Let me tell you how wrong your statement of “My ancestors had slaves, they did not treat them any horrible than what they would treat your kids.”

Did your ancestors include their children in lists of their inventory? Did your ancestors refer to their children only as “sturdy” or “sickly”? Did your ancestors only list their children by sex and age rather than ever referring to them by name? Did your ancestors not even bother to get to know the names of their children because they could be bought and sold at the drop of a hat?

You know what pushed me to be so active in my fight against racism?

I found all that shit mentioned above in my grandmother’s basement. I found the inventories of my ancestors from long ago who wrote of fellow human beings as if they were property.

I’ve carried that guilt with me ever since I found those documents nearly 5 years ago.

But I don’t whine on my fucking blog about how slavery wasn’t that bad or how it isn’t my fault because I’ve never owned a slave.

It was fucking terrible. You and I are the type of people who owe it to the anti-racism movement because of what our ancestors did.

I don’t care that you never owned a slave. I didn’t either.

And furthermore, how dare you call slavery not that bad. Were you there? Have you experienced racism even 150 years later?

No, you haven’t because you’re white. Sit the fuck down.

I will be damned if I do not try EVERY FUCKING DAY to right the wrongs that my ancestors inflicted upon African-Americans.

I have very, very close ties to Germany. My dad’s side of the family is 100% German. My dad was born in Germany. Germany is a major part of my heritage. It’s something I identify with. I’m proud of the fact that I am German.

But I do not have a Nazi flag in my car. That is a part of my history about which I have collective guilt. Most Germans do, even though young one’s like me weren’t even alive at the time of WWII. We don’t say, “Well, yeah, that whole Auschwitz thing was bad, but it was just a part of the culture at that time to be racist.”

And yes, I may point out that my grandfather didn’t really want to be a Nazi soldier, but he enlisted so he could decide where he would go to fight. If they drafted you, you’d have no choice, and since he had friends in England and America, he figured if he had to fight anyway (and pretty much every young, able-bodied man would), it might as well be Russia. He was shot in the stomach with shrapnel and would have died if his mother hadn’t gone to the hospital just behind the front line and bitched out the doctor, saying, “You treat my son!” And then later, he was kidnapped and sent to a Russian gulag, which he miraculously survived with the help of his friend, Hans. Is anyone in my family proud that he was a Nazi soldier? No. In fact, war is a horrible, horrible thing, and no one should ever have to be a soldier. And I think most soldiers who saw real combat know this. War changes a person, and while we should always respect soldiers for their sacrifice, we should also always remember that it was a sacrifice. They lost something. Now maybe if they lost it for something worth fighting for, it makes that pill easier to swallow. But then, is anything really worth killing another human being for?

This idea of war as hell, as something unglamorous, it’s something that’s grown in me through hearing my grandparents stories of WWII. My anti-war, pacifist stance is something I think comes from the fact that my family has experienced war first-hand, in a way many American family’s haven’t. Hitler was certainly in the wrong, and had to be stopped, but a lot of wars aren’t that clear-cut. And even in WWII, the Allies weren’t exactly exemplars of human beings either. Remember Hiroshima and Nagisaki? Or how about something smaller:

My grandma’s school was bombed by the English when she was just a little girl. She had to crawl out through the rubble and dead bodies. French slaves helped her hide while the English planes tried to strafe her with gunfire. Yes, the English tried to kill my grandmother when she was just a little girl. Now I don’t hold this against the English themselves, but it just showed me growing up how no one is really innocent in war.

But I don’t think that these facts, that my grandma and grandpa had nothing to do with the Holocaust, and that they were hurt by the atrocities of the war as well, means that it is in anyway acceptable for me to fly a Nazi flag because I am “proud of your heritage.” I have no direct connections to the horrors of the Holocaust, and yet my German heritage is tied to it. And it is something I am always aware of, that I am careful about, that I feel guilty about.

So I don’t care if you have “negro” friends (do you really call them “negro”?). I have Jewish friends. That doesn’t make it okay for me to be “proud of my heritage” by celebrating Nazism. I don’t care that your family was rebelling against a “corrupt government.” The Germans were rebelling against the unjust Treaty of Versailles that crippled the German economy, but that doesn’t validate all the racism that went along with their war. And again, that doesn’t make it okay to fly a Nazi flag. That doesn’t make it okay to say, “The Reich will rise again!”

And I have no desire to do any of these things.

I feel guilty about this part of my heritage in a very real way, and I act on that guilt by fighting against racism and bigotry wherever I find it. A German who flies a Nazi flag would be considered a racist and anti-Semite for a very good reason. It’s those same basic reasons that people who fly Confederate flags and say “The South will rise again!” are considered racist. Because that is not a part of one’s culture about which one should feel proud. It’s okay to identify yourself as a “Southerner.” It’s okay to be proud of that heritage.

But when it comes to those actions of your forebears, when it comes to that war motivated by slavery and racism, well, that’s a place where you should have a healthy sense of collective guilt that impels you to do good. You know, to fight against racism in this country and the fact that many African Americans are still held down in ghettos and in poverty, which is part of the ongoing effects of the history of slavery and racism going all the way back to your slave-owning ancestor, regardless of how “nice” they were.

*drops mic and walks away*

I can understand not liking Ann Coulter. I don’t like Ann Coulter! There are lots, and lots, and lots of excellent reasons not to like her.

So why is it that, instead of focusing on those reasons, you instead default to going “lol it’s a tranny”?

I don’t know whether Coulter is trans or not. Furthermore, I don’t care. It’s completely irrelevant to the legitimate reasons not to like her. The thing is, when you insult her by calling her a trans woman (and using a slur in the process), you are saying that being a trans woman is a bad thing. Thus, you are attacking trans women more than you’re attacking Coulter specifically.

Again, yes, I know she’s an evil fucking liar! I know! And I’m not on her side, and I’m not saying she shouldn’t be criticized, or anything like that. It’s just that when you make this sort of “joke”, you are not hurting Coulter as much as you are hurting all trans women. So not only is your criticism ineffective (because you’re not actually talking about anything relevant), but, by spreading transmisogyny, you make it that much harder for us to exist in this world.

Stop it, please and thank you.
